You have probably heard by now the controversy about Carly Smithson. Just in case you haven’t though, it turns out that she had previously had a record deal before appearing on American Idol. Geffen Records, signed Carly Smithson to a record deal. Her first album Ultimate High which, after Geffen spent a little over 2 millions dollars to produce and promote, managed to only sell about 300 copies. This is the video for I’m Gonna Blow Your Mind, one of the two singles released off of the album (Beautiful Mind was the other single).
As you can see from the video Carly was much younger. She wasn’t married yet so she was still went by the name Carly Hennessy. She also didn’t have her trademark sleeve tattoo yet. From my understanding, Carly isn’t the first American Idol finalist to have previously had a record contract which went bust before being on Idol. Considering she only sold 300 albums (most of which are probably still in her basement) I personally don’t think it’s that big of a deal, but I posted the video because I thought it was interesting.
