Your Mama Don’t Dance

Lifetime television has recently announced its newest reality TV offering: Your Mama Don’t Dance. I guess with the popularity of other dance centered reality shows like Dancing With The Stars and So You Think You Can Dance, Lifetime thinks this show will garner some big ratings. They have even gotten a former Dancing With The Stars contestant, Ian Ziering of 90210 fame, to host the show. This is how Lifetime describes the show:

In this reality series, some of America’s hottest dancers auditioned for a chance to be a part of a new dance competition show under the pseudonym “Dance Nation,” but they had no idea what was really in store for them. They soon discovered that they’d be working with a partner and that their partner would be one of their parents! Now, five female dancers will be fox-trotting with their fathers while five male dancers will be doing the mambo with their mothers as they vie for praise from the judges and for America’s votes. They must put aside their differences, not step on each other’s toes and work together as a team to become the grand champions.

Who decides the winners? The judges and you! Each week, the judges will put the two teams with the lowest scores on the chopping block, then it’s up to America to determine which team stays in the competition by voting via phone, text and online. The winning team will be announced on Friday, April 18, at the end of the show, following a live vote, and will take home the title and $100,000 in cash and prizes.

Obviously the interest with in this show is as much about the relationship between the dancers and their parents as it is about the dancing itself. Part of the entertainment value for those of you with a cruel streak will be watching the parents try to dance. Having watched some of the previews, I’m pretty sure that most of the parents are not athletes and basically can’t dance to save their lives. The judges are choreographer and actor Cris Judd, Tony Award–winning actor, dancer and singer Ben Vereen, and actress and singer VITAMIN C. While I am a big fan of both Dancing With The Stars and So You Think You Can Dance, with all of the other reality shows on TV right now I doubt I will have time to catch more than one or two episodes of this on Tivo. I think Lifetime would have been better off scheduling this program during a time when there was less reality TV competition. American Idol and Big Brother are in full swing and Dancing With The Stars and The Bachelor will both be starting up shortly which will take up a considerable amount of reality fans TV time. Your Mama Don’t Dance premieres tonight on Lifetime at 9/8c.
