In keeping with the decades of the past theme, tonight the remaining 8 American Idol guys will perform songs from the 80’s. Here’s how they did:
Luke Menard: Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go
The judges seemed surprised by his song choice (I wasn’t). Hopefully Luke will be going home this Thursday.
David Archuleta: Another Day In Paradise
David had a hard time trying to live up to his amazing performance last week. He did an OK job with this song but it was no where near as good as last week. Randy and Paula thought David was a little pitchy and didn’t hit the notes properly. Simon found David’s arrangement to be depressing. He wants David to be a little more upbeat next week.
Danny Noriega: Tainted Love
I love this song, but I didn’t like the way Danny performed it. Randy and Paula both really seemed to enjoy it. Simon hated it. I mean he really hated it.
David Hernandez: It’s All Coming Back To Me Now
I thought David Hernandez’ choice of this Celine Dion song was unusual to say the least. The judges thought he had some pitch problems but they thought that overall he did well for a song with such a high degree of difficulty.
Michael Johns: Don’t You (Forget About Me)
This was one of the classic anthems of the 80’s by Simple Minds made famous by that classic 80’s movie The Breakfast Club. The judges thought he did a good job with this song. Randy thought that Michael selected a good song for him. Paula was glad that he was starting the define himself as a singer. Simon thought that Michael was better as a soul singer than a rocker. My advice to Michael Johns is just remember what happened the the last soul singer on American Idol. He won, but then his career tanked.
David Cook: I love you, Lionel Richie
This was definitely the performance of the night. David Cook did a rock arrangement of this Lionel Richie song during which he played the electric guitar. It was very good. The conclusion was that this song could be released as a single today. This will probably be one of the performances that I will go and download this week. All of the judges loved it.
Jason Castro: Hallelujah
It was nice to see Jason Castro without his guitar for once. I really like this song he sang. I remember Hallelujah best from the Shrek sound track. This is the other performance that would be a great download. I think that Jason’s pre-performance video once again made him look like a bit dim. Despite being dim, Simon described him as, “Absolutely brilliant.” Simon actually told Jason that he was, “getting better and better and better.”
Chikezie Eze: All the Woman That I Need
Randy and Paula didn’t think that Chikezie did as good a job as he did last week. That being said they also thought he would not be leaving this week. Simon seemed to think that Chikezie did OK until he found out that this was a cover of Whitney Houston, then suddenly Simon thought it was too cabaret.
Download this weeks performances on iTunes.
