I would break down last night’s American Idol performances into 3 groups: The Truly Awesome, The Pretty Good, and the Truly Awful. There were three really standout performances in my mind last night: Chikezie Eze, David Cook, and Carly Smithson. These are the three performances that I will be downloading this week. Some people would argue that Brooke should be up with these guys too. I liked her performance and I know it was really popular but, it just didn’t do it for me. She definitely won’t be going home tonight though. Both Amanda Overmyer and Syesha Mercado had pretty mediocre performances last night but I would be surprised if either of them went home yet. David Archuleta had his worst performance to date but he is so popular that he is a shoe in to make it through. Unfortunately, I think that David Archuleta could walk out there and yodel Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and people would vote for him. He definitely has the cult-like following this season. I think Simon’s comment about the show being a talent competition instead of a popularity contest was directed at Archuleta’s fans.
The performers who are in the greatest danger are Kristy Lee Cook and David Hernandez. Last night, I described David Hernandez’s performance as something from a bad high school musical. After reviewing it again today, all I can say was i was right. He dressed, performed, and sang like he should be on Your The One That I Want instead of American Idol. Kristy Lee Cook’s Hayseed Dixie version of Eight days A Week was awful. It was just bad. I give her props for taking a risk, but it didn’t pay off. Frankly, I can’t imagine that Kristy will not be going home tonight. I will be shocked if she comes back next week. Even if she survives until next week, her days are numbered.
