Ryan started the show with a big American Idol announcement, due to fan feedback they have decided to have the contestants sing songs from the Lennon-McCartney songbook again next week. The cynical part of me says that this was the FOX producers planned this all along (especially after they no doubt spent a small fortune to gain access to it) but what do I know? Ryan’s big announcement was followed by the contestants performing a medley of Beatles tunes. I find it humorous that after the judges consistently criticize the contestants for sounding too cabaret, they make them perform a Broadway-style extravaganza to start the results show each week.
Now that we are into the mode where there are individual eliminations each week, Ryan started calling out the bottom three tonight. Tonight when he asked a few of the contestants to stand up. He walked right down the line and told Carly Smithson, Michael Johns, and Jason Castro to sit down. Syesha Mercado was the first performer in danger. If she had sung last night the way she did tonight, she wouldn’t have been in the bottom three. Too bad it was too late for her.
The next batch were Chikezie Eze, Amanda Overmyer, David Cook, and Kristy Lee Cook. Hmmm, I wonder which one could it be? Could if be… Kristy Lee Cook? When Ryan called out that group, even she knew who was going to be in the bottom three. Kristy actually asked Ryan for the Mike before he even announced her name. At least she had a sense of humor about it. Unfortunately, Kristy’s song didn’t sound any better tonight. The arrangement was just bad… really bad. And that’s too bad, she has a spectacular voice. She should have gone more Carrie Underwood and less Dolly Parton.
The next big excitement of the night was ‘On Air with American Idol’. Ryan has apparently taken a page from his radio show since American Idol is now taking callers. This wasn’t cute, it wasn’t funny, it was just annoying. In an effort to pad the show out to a full hour, they next the dragged out another artist from the American Idol crypt. Catherine McPhee performed Something in the Way She Moves. This is the first time I’ve seen her anywhere except the tabloids since she left the show. She sounded great and looked even better but, at this point in the show I just wanted Ryan to get on with it.
When Ryan finally got around to calling up the final four contestants it was David Archuleta, Brooke White, Ramiele Malubay, and David Hernandez. Once again it was no surprise. David Hernandez was in the bottom three (what a shock.). For all the effort they make to build the suspense, I could have told you who was in the bottom three last night. There was not a single surprise. I’ll tell you what was a shock, when they showed Ramiele’s family. Danny Noriega was sitting there with them and subtitled Ramiele’s Best Friend! WTF? Apparently Ramiele makes friends really fast.
This Week’s Bottom Three:
- Syesha Mercado
- Kristy Lee Cook
- David Hernandez
The judges agreed with America’s decision 100%. Or should i say ’spot on’ like Simon? I have to say, I agree too. Although it could have just as easily have been Ramiele as Syesha. In the end though, neither Syesha nor Kristy would be leaving the show. Kristy is just lucky they didn’t send two people home this week.
Say Goodbye to David Hernandez America.
Come back next week when well review the performances of the American Idol Top 11.
