Season 6 of Dancing With The Stars will see the first contestant who is deaf. Movie and TV star Marlee Maitlin is one of this season’s stars. Matlin lost all hearing in her right ear, and 80% of hearing in her left ear at eighteen months of age. The first question which came to mind for me was, ‘How can she dance if she can’t hear the music?’ Matlin answered that question in an interview posted on CNN.com this week.
Her dance partner, first time DWTS pro Fabian Sanchez, has modified their routines to include more physical and visual contact between the duo so that she can use him to keep the beat. Sanchez also said that, Matlin has a ‘natural rhythm’ which allows her to remain on the beat even when the two are separated. Personally, I’ll be really interested to see how well this works and how far she gets. If she can do it, I say good for her. We’ll see Marlee Matlin dance for the first time next Tuesday night during the second night of the two night season premiere.
