Red Band Trailer

Do wiggle in excitement as you sit in the theater waiting for your R-Rated filth to flow over you? Are you tired of having to wait through clean trailer after obscenity-empty preview? Well then Regal is the theater for you! Today Regal Theaters has announced they will bring back “red band trailers” to R+ rated movies. Not familiar with the foul-mouthed, nudity filled “red band”? MPAA explains:

The MPAA’s Advertising Administration, which oversees the advertising materials used by its member studios, approves two types of trailers for use in the theaters. So-called green band trailers — also known as green-tag trailers — open with a green advisory card that reads “the following preview has been approved for all audiences.” Red band trailers, which can appear only before R-rated, NC-17-rated or unrated movies, warn that “the following preview has been approved for restricted audiences only.”

Honestly, I always thought it was kinda dumb to have a G-rated trailer for “Hostel” play in front of “Saw 3″. Apparently Regal feels the same way and in lieu of their original plans to wait until digital movies were the norm in theaters (in lieu of the current film presentations) they’ll be moving ahead and showing these again. The original problem arose from reels with the R-rated trailers mistakenly being placed in front of films rated under R. With the advent of digital systems they thought it’d be easy to control and prevent that issue. So why are they trying it again without the problem being fixed? It’s gotta come down to profits.

I couldn’t even remember ever having seen any R-rated trailers, but apparently the practice didn’t stop until 2000. Pop quiz, hot shot: what was the last film to ever get a red-band trailer shown? It involved a little love making to a homemade pie.
