There were some absolutely amazing performances on American Idol last night. Frankly, all of the top 10 are truly quality singers. In my opinion all of the dead wood has been voted off. My favorite performance by far from last night was David Cook’s rendition of Billie Jean. I have always hated that song before but the spin he put on it ‘made me a believer’ as Paula would say.

David Archuleta had a great night again. Simon didn’t like it but I did and I think so did the fans. David had the benefit of singing a song almost no one had ever heard of before, so he avoided comparisons with the original.

Two performances which were questioned by the judges last night but which I personally really liked were Brooke White’s version of Every Breath You Take and Carly Smithson’s Total Eclipse of the Heart. In addition to David Cook’s, these will be my other two American Idol downloads for this week.

Michael Johns and Syesha Mercado both had break out performances last night. I think they should be safe. Syesha could end up in the bottom 3 but I doubt she will go home. Kristy Lee Cook had a good night, but I’m not sure that it will be enough to keep her out of the bottom 3 tonight. Her performances over the past few weeks have just not been very strong.

Chikezie is one of my favorite performers this season. His performances are all very original. Well except for last night. It was good, but did not show his personality or originality which are the two things his fans are looking for. I think that based on his previous performances Chikezie should also survive through to next week.

In my opinion the two worst performances last night were by Jason Castro and Ramiele Malubay. Jason Castro’s performance was really weak last night. It sounded just like every other song he has done this season. Now he has a lot of fans who like his sound but he didn’t garner any new ones last night. For his sake I hope he ends up in the bottom three tonight. Maybe that will motivate him to take some more risks in the weeks to come.

Ramiele Malubay is in big trouble. Her rendition of Alone was OK. It showed off her voice but it also showed she still just can’t really sing contemporary music. I think Ramiele will be headed home tonight.
