Jared Leto

Last week I shared the poster for Jared Leto’s new movie “Chapter 27″ where he gained 60 pounds to look more like John Lennon’s assassin, Mark David Chapman. Since then Leto has gotten a lot of attention for his transformation and he shared some details on how difficult it was and the dangers to his health as a result:

“I’d never do it again; it definitely gave me some problems. I don’t know if it was gout - but I had a definite problem with my feet. Towards the end of the shoot, one of the glaring issues was the pain I had with my feet. I couldn’t walk for long distances; I had a wheelchair because it was so painful. My body was in shock from the amount of weight I gained. It took about a year to get back to a place that felt semi-normal. I don’t know if I’ll ever be back to the place I was physically.”

Jared went on to explain how he’d run into old friends who thought he had just let himself go. I’ll have to remember that one. “Oh hey, Mike. Nah, nah. I’m just bulking up for my next movie. Bulking up and widening out. That’s why they pay me the big bucks.”

I don’t see why they couldn’t have just used a “fat suit” for this one. I’m pretty sure they didn’t actual mangle his face in Fight Club, yet that was still quite effective.

Discuss: Has Jared Leto’s weight gain ruined your “My So Called Life” fantasies forever?

I can’t believe that this hunk just let himself get carried away by some stupid directors who wanted him to sacrifice his health to play a role of someone fat. They could have simply taken someone who was the size that they wanted him to be or given Jared Leto a suit to make him physically look bulkier.
It’s a horrible shame to destroy what Jared had so long worked in order to gain. Its an even bigger embarrassment knowing that these directors and producers are behind Jared’s health risks.
Of course it is Jared who has given himself a tough time, but they should have said no in the first place! Its a disgrace to see such a young man become at risk with his health only because it was said that it was needed for a role that anyone else the size of him now could have taken.
I am enraged at the thought of knowing that these unbelievably stupid directors would have let him do something like this. And Jared Leto hasn’t failed in disappointing me by destroying his physical beauty for something that could have been done by so many other.
Not only is he a successful man through quite a number of films and his band 30 Seconds To Mars, but he is a man known for his incredible looks… which, ladies and gentlemen, you don’t get in a bundle like him nowadays!
I hope that this amazing man will get close to what he used to look like, but I am also convinced that he will never look anything like he used to.
It’s a terrible shame. God Bless Him.

It is amazing that anyone would have considered allowing Leto to do this to himself. If he had died from complications (as it sounds like it got pretty serious) that studio would have been sued out the wazoo over that. But worst of all, like you pointed out, was Jared’s compliance in this whole thing.

Best of luck, Jared, we hope you can get healthy and lean again!
