American Idol Stage

American Idol Phone Numbers

Dolly Parton was the first star this season to help the American Idol finalists this season. I’m not really a big fan of Dolly Parton so this week was night was a little tough for me. It wasn’t always easy for me to separate my feelings about the songs versus my feelings about the performances. Even though he would never admit it, I think Simon had the same problem. Here is my recap of this weeks performances:

Brooke White: Jolene
Brooke’s played the guitar with minimal backup from the band in her kind of folksy version of Jolene. Brooke sounded good. I didn’t really think it was anything special though. Brooke’s performance will be good enough to get her through to next week.
Randy: “Not a stellar performance for me but it was alright.”
Paula: “You’re consistant you put your heart and soul into everything you sing.”
Simon: “I totally disagree with Paula. I didn’t see any emotion. I thought all of you looked very odd together as a group.”

David Cook: Little Sparrow
I have never heard of Little Sparrow before. David did his own arrangement of the song this week. I really liked his arrangement which is surprising because I don’t like a lot a of Dolly Parton’s music even though I am a fan of Country.
Randy: “Another hot consistent performance.”
Paula: “I like your hair cut. I’ve never heard a guy do that song. It was fantastic.”
Simon: “I’m not going to say it was as good as last week because it wasn’t but if you can make a song about sparrows sound good, congratulations.”

Ramiele Malubay: Do I Ever Cross Your Mind

I thought Ramiele made a good song for her this week. She sang it well but, as I have said for the past several weeks, Ramiele just isn’t a real pop singer. She has a great voice but doesn’t really have what it takes to be a top 40 artist.
Randy: “I thought it was a 6 and a half out of 10″
Paula: “You had a great minute and thirty seconds.”
Simon: “Look we’re not going to remember this in 10 years. I thought this was very reminiscent of something you would hear on a cruise line.”

Jason Castro: Traveling Through
Before his performance Ryan read Jason a postcard from a fan which read, “You’re voice is as relaxing as the scene on this card.” I agree, his performances usually put me to sleep. I liked tonight’s performance one much better than the past couple of weeks. Jason actually seemed to put a little more energy into this one than he has recently. This was one of his better performances.
Randy: “I started believing. You worked it out.”
Paula: “This was one of your strongest performances.”
Simon: “I didn’t like that at all. I didn’t think you sang it particularly well. If this had been the first time I had seen you or heard I wouldn’t get it.”

Carly Smithson: Here You Come Again
Brilliant. Carly’s voice sounded amazing tonight. I liked her version much, much better than the original. This one is a definite download this week.
Randy: “I do believe that will be one of the better performances of the night.”
Paula: “That was glorious.”
Simon: “I thought it was good. I didn’t think it was great. I think Carly, you need to have a word with whoever is dressing you… you need to look more like a star.”

David Archeluta: Smokey Mountain Memories
This song was pretty standard fare from David Archuleta. If you like David you’ll love this song. If your not a huge fan of David’s then this song will be just OK for you. It was just OK for me; nothing really special though. The audience and the judges didn’t agree with me.
Randy: “David Archuleta is back tonight… that was the best performance of the night.”
Paula: “Glorious.”
Simon: “I had problems with your song choice last week. This week, absolutely on the money.”

Kristy Lee Cook: Coat of Many Colors
This week’s theme was perfect for Kristy. Kristy did a really nice job with this song. I think tonight was probably Kristy’s best performance.
Randy: “This was right in your wheelhouse.”
Paula: “Your best performance.”
Simon: “I totally disagree. Last week was your best performance. This week was pleasant but forgettable.”

Syesha Mercado: I Will Always Love You

I Will Always Love You is a big, big song. Syesha loves to sing these but every time she does the judges criticize her because her voice isn’t as big as the song. Even though she sang a simpler version instead of the Whitney Houston version I’m sure that everyone in the audience was comparing her to Whitney.
Randy: “It was alright. Its hard for me to hear anyone else sing that song.”
Paula: “Your voice has a velvety tone.”
Simon: “The first part was good but the second part paled in comparison to the Whitney version.”

Michael Johns: Its All Wrong But Its Alright
This may very well have been Michael John’s best performance of the season. He had a cool kind of blusey thing going on. I liked that a lot and so did the fans.
Randy: “Nice job.”
Paula: “You’re a star.”
Simon: “I think this is the best I have heard you sing.”

Wow, what a great performance by Michael tonight! By FAR his best. I think he really found his groove. Vocals were hard, and spot-on. Fabulous arrangement! Great job by David Cook, of course, and Carly too. Simon’s right, though, wardrobe doesn’t like Carly, or she isn’t taking their advice. I think Rami is done IMO.

[...] Last night’s American Idol performance show was pretty interesting. None of the Top 9 really had a terrible night. There were a few performances that stood out. My top three were probably David Cook’s Little Sparrow, Carly Smithson’s Here You Come Again, and Michael John’s Its All Wrong But Its Alright. I think that David Archuleta’s Smokey Mountain Memories, Jason Castro’s Traveling Through, and Brook White’s Jolene were also very popular with the fans. I feel safe in saying that none of these six will be going home. [...]
