Yesterday I told you about NBC renewing 30 Rock (awesome!) and then making the decision to spin-off The Office into another show (terrible!). Today I’ll give you a look at some more of the shows coming up from NBC in their Fall 2008 TV schedule.
There will be four new shows: My Own Worst Enemy, Kath & Kim, Knight Rider, & Crusoe. ‘Enemy‘ will be starring Christian Slater (guess the movie roles aren’t flooding in) as a man with a split personality:
Henry and Edward are polar opposites who share only one thing in common: the same body. When the carefully constructed wall between them breaks down, Henry and Edward are thrust into unfamiliar territory where each man is dangerously out of his element.
My Own Worst Enemy explores the duality of a man who is literally pitted against himself. Which raises the question: who can you trust when you can’t trust yourself?
Hmm, I wonder if he’ll have a girlfriend named Marla Singer, but then he won’t know if she likes him or Tyler Durden. What’s that loud tearing sound?
Next up is Kath & Kim which features the return of Molly Shannon. I’m glad to see her back on TV, though she probably shouldn’t have left SNL to pursue a new career as a professional cameo star in indie films. I’m also surprised to see Selma Blair here, but I guess Hell Boy movies can’t fill an entire calendar.
Kath Day is the mom. She’s a foxy, 40-something divorcée who finally has time for herself and her valiant search for love. Kim Day is the daughter. She’s a self-absorbed princess, recently separated from her husband, who finds consolation in stuffing her face. When Kim decides to move back home, Kath reluctantly agrees. But to Kim’s chagrin, Kath is not about to cater to her daughter’s every whim like she has in the past.
Back in February NBC put out the Knight Rider TV movie with plans to see how it was received in anticipation for converting it into a regular series. This Fall they’ll make that transition with the introduction of a weekly hour long drama. No guesses needed on what Knight Rider will be about, but here it is anyway:
As the original story resumes, the new KITT (Knight Industries Three Thousand) is absolutely the coolest car ever created: its supercomputer capable of hacking almost any system; its weapons systems efficient; and its body — thanks to its creator’s work and nanotechnology — is capable of actually shifting shape and color. Plus, its artificial intelligence makes it the ideal good cop partner: logical, precise and possessing infinite knowledge. It is the ultimate car — and some will be willing to do anything to obtain it.
Last is another one that feels a little too familiar to me, Crusoe. It stars Tom Hanks as a castaway on an island with little but the memory of his loved one back home to keep him sane. Oh wait, did I say Tom Hanks? That was “Castaway”, this is Crusoe. Totally different.
A young man leaves his true love to embark on an adventure, only to end up shipwrecked on a remote tropical island for 28 years, completely detached from the life he once knew. His desire to return to his wife and his strong and unlikely friendship with Friday are the only things that keep him sane.
I dunno. “Castaway” was boring as anything and that was just 2 hours. This would be 22 hours worth a season of a guy sitting on the beach yelling at a volleyball. Blerg.
Here’s one interesting schedule twist. The Office will start up in the Fall with hour long episodes, like they did last year. But then starting in October Saturday Night Live will begin running Thursday night half hour episodes. Why? To do political comedy news in the lead up to the election in Novemeber. Genius! They can name it after something about being on every week. Um… how about “The Weekly Show: Starring Jon Stewart SNL”. Sigh. Come on NBC. Aren’t the writers back now so they can make some new show ideas for you?
A lot of your other staples from NBC will be back. You can see the full 2008 Fall NBC TV schedule here on the NBC site.
