The American Idol finalists had a wide range of songs to choose from this week. They selected songs which inspired them. To be honest Ii didn’t like a lot of their choices. Even some of my favorite contestants like David Cook and Carly Smithson gave, what were in my opinion, lack luster performances. When Kristy Lee Cook and Michael Johns have two of the best performances of the week, you know that it was not a good week. I’m also not a big fan of David Archuleta. While his voice is fantastic, his performances always seem too contrived to me, maybe even bordering on fake. I will say that his performance of Angels this week was definitely one of the best so there will be no question of him going home. The judges gushed over Jason Castro’s performance of Somewhere Over The Rainbow. It didn’t do much for me, but he’ll make it through.
If I were to base my prediction of the bottom three solely on the performances from the previous weeks, it would have been Syesha Mercado, Kristy Lee Cook, and Michael Johns. However, in light of the good performances of two of these artists, and the mediocre performances of several of the favorites, I would have to change my prediction. I still think Syesha will be in the bottom three. This girl just keeps picking songs that are way too big for her and she did it again this week. Kristy Lee Cook had what I thought was the best performance of the night. She was brilliant. I think it will be enough to save her, possibly even get her out of the bottom three for a week. She still has no chance to win but I think she will be safe this week. Likewise, Michael Johns, who is very talented but not up to the level of some of the other finalists, also had a relatively good performance. I think he will survive again as well.
So if Kristy Lee and Michael are safe, who else might be in trouble? I hate to say it, but Carly Smithson had one of her worst performances of the season. While I doubt she will go home, she could easily be in the bottom three. David Cook is hard one to predict. I like him a lot. I really think he has a chance to win the whole show. His performance this week was one of his weaker ones. Whether he ends up in the bottom three will be based solely on his fan base as opposed to his performance this week. Brooke White’s You’ve Got a Friend was really nice, not awesome, but really, really nice. At the moment she is in my opinion a middle-of-the-packer. If she wants to win she needs to step it up in the next week or two.
My prediction for the bottom three tonight are Syesha Mercado, Carly Smithson, and Brooke White. At the end of the night, I think it will be Syesha going home this week.
