Tonight is Mariah Carey night on American Idol. The remaining idols sang songs by Mariah Carey. The guys really stepped it up this week. They took Mariah’s songs and made them unique. The women for the most part (With Kristy Lee Cook being the exception) did much less to make the songs their own.
David Archeluta: When You Believe
As usual David sang that song very well. I didn’t think he did much to make that song his own though. It was good but not original. Randy said that he could sing anything, and he can, but he needs to do more with the songs when he sings them.
Randy: “If you can sing, you can sing anything, and you can sing anything.”
Paula: “You made her [Mariah Carey] proud.”
Simon: “I thought it was very very good. You performed that very very well.”
Carly Smithson: I Can’t Live (If Living Is Without You)
Carly has really good set of pipes on her. I actually think she did that song justice. That being said, she also didn’t do much to make it original either.
Randy: “The beginning was a little loosey-goosey for me, pretty good.”
Paula: “You swelled and soared.”
Simon: “I really wanted to hear you sing this song… now we have a direct comparison, I don’t think you pulled it off. I thought it was an OK version.”
Syesha Mercado: Vanishing
Syesha did a pretty good job with that. It wasn’t as good as Mariah Carey and it wasn’t much unique about it. Given the choice, I’d download the original instead of Syesha’s version.
Randy: “I like that you’re bold… You did a good job on it all things considered. A couple of pitchy moments.”
Paula: “Your smart because you picked a song that not many people know. Overall tonight was unbelievably magical for you.”
Simon: “Technically it was very very good indeed… at this point in the competition I’m not sure that I would have picked a song that not many people know.”
Brooke White: Hero
Brooke’s performance really didn’t do a lot for me. While I like Brooke a lot and I root for her every week, I have to say that was probably the performance that I liked the least tonight. Was she shaking during the close ups?
Randy: “I appreciate the singer-song writer look. I thought it was pretty good.”
Paula: “I think this unplugged version sounded really good. There were a few off notes.”
Simon: “It was a bit like ordering a hamburger and only getting the bun. The vital ingredient was missing… I don’t think your voice is strong enough to carry that song.”
Kristy Lee Cook: Forever
Kristy Lee picked another song that not many people know. She put a real country spin on it which was great for her. It was kind of like Patsy Cline does Mariah Carey. While I’m not sure she will pull alot of votes
Randy: “I didn’t think that was amazing… you definitely started to step towards the end.”
Paula: “I’m like blown away. What I love most was how the arrangement was done.”
Simon: “You didn’t give me chills. You managed with what you could. It just wasn’t great.”
David Cook: Always Be My Baby
Wow. That was without a doubt the most amazing performance of the night. David Cook delivered tonight. That was an awesome arrangement. This time given a choice of downloading David’s version or the original I would download Cook’s. It was like Creed does Mariah Carey. Superb.
Randy: “I think more than anyone on this show you are ready to make an album. That was the most brilliant performance yet.”
Paula: “That song could be in a movie sound track right now.”
Simon: “That was like coming out of Kareoke Hell into a breath of fresh air. It was brilliant, it was daring.”
Jason Castro: I Don’t Want To Cry
That was pretty cool. I’m not a huge fan of Jason’s but, he definitely took that one and put his own spin on it. Nice job Jason.
Randy: “I didn’t really love that. It was weird for me. I didn’t get it. ”
Paula: “You’re getting so confident.”
Simon: “I’m going to have to agree with Paula. It wasn’t a great vocal. It was a cool version.”

I think David C was good, but overpraised this time. The first part was kind of slow and boring to me. He picked it up later, which was really good. But I didn’t feel it as much as the judges or maybe lots of other people do. He was very good, but like standing ovation, etc (like Randy), ???? don’t quite get it.

I too think DC was overpraised, and to add to it - the cameras panning to his sick bro and the tears, it was just a little too much!
He did a good job, but vocally definitely not on par with DA. DA was superb, and we finally hear a nice little falsetto. What Simon didn’t say was DA put X-Factor’s Leon Jackson to shame on his No 1 Christmas hit!

David Cook singing tonight, and everything that went with it was one of THE most memorable moments on Idol to this date. (his brother, Adam, who has cancer, and his wife, were flown to LA by a number of generous people from Adam’s town so he could see the performance and visit). Nothing of the night can compare to the performance, the meaning behind it for a NUMBER of people and the emotion of David, his family PLUS the proper kudos from the judges. I’ll never forget it and am blessed to have it taped. Best wishes and prayers to Adam, his family and David. David C., you are a gift to us, with everything you have brought and made us think about. That doesn’t take away from the gifts of David A. or any of the others. but David C. is in a league of his own.

Agree wholeheartedly about David C. Loved his performance, and the creativity needed to give a Mariah song the Cooking. I don’t think it was wrong to show his brother, everyone knows what’s going on and is hoping for a miracle for Adam. Archie just always sounds the same to me, good singer, but not very exciting.

Today was the first I have even heard of David’s brother and his cancer. I don’t frequent the website, I just watch the show and that’s it. David had been a favorite of mine from the beginning, and he has a great amount of talent that shouldn’t be overlooked just because he has a crisis going on in his family. Judge him by his vocals and talent alone and you will find he is one of the best that has come across AI period!
My thoughts and prayers are with David and the Cook Family. Best Wishes!
