Last Night’s American Idol show was not one of my favorites. I think it was a little too hard for the idols who are trying to be pop stars to take a Broadway show tune and make it their own contemporary hit. For the most part, I thought that with the exception of David Archuleta, all of the performances were too Broadway-esque (yes, I just made up that word). He was the one idol I was sure was going to sound like he should be on Broadway.
In particular Jason Castro and Brooke White had a really bad night. Jason’s rendition of Memories was bad. On Broadway he may have been booed off the stage. Brooke was trying so hard to bring the emotion like Andrew Lloyd Webber told her that she lost the lyrics, had to restart, and for most of the song sounded awful. I agree with the judges that Syesha has found her niche. She should give up trying to be a pop star and hit Broadway. She sounded great last night but it was a very cabaret performance. Perfect for Broadway but not so much on Idol.
Carly Smithson’s version of Jesus Christ Superstar was perhaps one of the best versions of that song I have ever heard. Kudos to Carly. David Cook did a great job with Music of the Night. While his performance was very Broadway, he sounded great. He pulled it off because even though everyone knows and loves him as more of an alternative artist, he showed that he also really has an awesome voice as well.
In my mind there is no question who two of the bottom three will be tonight, Jason Castro and Brooke White. These two had the weakest performances hands down. It doesn’t matter who the third is (probably Syesha) because it will be either Jason or Brooke going home tonight. My money is on Brooke. Jason has developed a small but loyal fan following which I think will rescue him. Sorry Brooke.
