It’s a beautiful day out, so I’ll keep this one short. If you have a pulse and you love action movies then you must go see Iron Man. Heck, even if you only meet one of those two requirements you should grab your keys and head to the theater right now.
Iron Man is skillfully delivered throughout its fast paced two hours. Kudos to director Jon Favreau on what will most definitely be the door busting opener to a summer of blockbuster, big dollar earners. Iron Man is currently predicted to make over $100 million in its opening weekend and from what I saw today it deserves every penny.
Robert Downey Jr. could not have been better cast as Tony Stark, the ego-centric, womanizer turned superhero who faces his own mortality to break free from a terrorist plot and redeem his years of war mongering. Jeff Bridges is excellent in his near unrecognizable bald and bearded state as Stark’s second in command at Stark Industries and enjoys a bit of War Mongering himself. Terrence Howard is smart and smooth as Stark’s liaison to the U.S. Air Force and keeper of his secret identity. Gwenyth Paltrow finds herself a bit underutilized as the mousy assistant turned potential romance, though a few moments show her potential for the sequels.
Yes, sequels. Iron Man is the first of a planned trilogy with pre-production on the second installment set to start immediately. But before we get ahead of ourselves this first chapter is a winner in every way. While the story may take its time to build the momentum never slows and as I watched my rating for this movie climbed from 4 stars to 5 out of 5 for its cast, story, and direction which are excellent in each aspect.
Tony Stark tells us, “sometimes you have to run before you can walk,” and as audiences will find, Iron Man hits the ground sprinting and never lets you down.
Bonus: Wait through the lengthy credits for a glimpse of things to come with Samuel L. Jackson’s cameo as Nick Fury, the leader of S.H.I.E.L.D.
