American Idol Stage

At the start of tonight’s American Idol Finale Ryan was excited because they received 97 million votes. This beat the previous record for the most votes by 23 million. Ryan of course made it sound like 97 million people voted. Obviously that’s not true. Someone in my sons class cast 245 votes last night. Ryan revealed that 54% of those votes were for the winning David while, 44% were cast for the losing David.

Unlike the Dancing With The Stars Finale, this one was actually worth watching for two hours. Here are some of the moments on the show that I thought were the most interesting: Syesha sounded fabulous doing her duet with Seal. I really wish she had made the finals. I hope she also gets a contract and becomes a mainstream performer. Jason Castro sang Hallelujah which was probably my favorite performance by him all season. When the final six female contestants performed hot stuff it was pretty cool. Amanda Overmyer looked very uncomfortable. When Donna Summer came out, she was backed up half a dozen dancers from last season’s So You Think You Can Dance which just happens to premiere on FOX tomorrow night at 8/7c. What a coincidence huh? The top six guys performance seemed a little rough. I didn’t think they sounded that great. Bryan Adams sounded great though. I had to go back and look up Danny Hernandez’s name because for the life of me I couldn’t remember it when he was out there singing.

Possibly the coolest moment of the night was when David Cook got to rock out on stage singing Sharp Dressed Man with ZZ Top! If you get to do that who even cares if you win? It’s a shame that at midnight tonight the American Idol performances on iTunes will be removed. I would have downloaded that performance. The funniest moment was when Gladys Knight and the Pips performed, except the Pips were Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and Robert Downey Jr. That was hysterical. Carrie Underwood came out and sang her new single. It’s amazing, she just keeps getting hotter and hotter. Her voice keeps getting better as time goes on too.

At the end of the show, Ryan gave the judges a chance to have their final say. Randy and Paula gave the standard spiel on what a great season it was and how great both the contestants were. I was surprised when Simon apologized to David Cook because he had reviewed the show last night and didn’t think it was as one sided as the judges made it out to be. He also felt that he had personally been a little too harsh on David Cook. What surprised me the most was when Simon said that because these competitors were both so great that he didn’t care who won. This was the first inkling I had on who the winner might be.

When Ryan finally announced the winner of American Idol Season 7 it was David Cook. I was shocked. I could not believe it. I didn’t think there was anyway that David Archuleta was not going to win. I bet Jeff Archuleta is bitter. I take back almost everything I said during my preview post earlier today.

Congratulations to American Idol 2008
